The $10,000 WIHS Children's and Adult Championships are held for both hunters and jumpers. Riders compete throughout the year to earn a spot at the finals at Verizon Center in Washington, DC. The qualifying period runs from shows starting on or after Sept. 1 through shows starting on or before Aug. 31. WIHS Children's and Adults Championship competitors must be WIHS members in order for points to count for the Finals. See links below for current standings.

WIHS qualifying classes are held at more than 200 horse shows nationwide.

WIHS Children’s & Adult Hunter Championships

Elgibility: Thirty horse/rider combinations will be accepted based on points earned during the qualifying period. In addition, the overall children’s and adult hunter champions at the 2010 WIHS Regional Horse Show automatically will qualify. Riders are limited to showing two horses in the Hunter Championships. Riders may not compete in any other hunter class at the Washington International Horse Show. Horses may not compete in any other class at the WIHS except the WIHS Equitation Finals.

Format: Competitors will be judged on performance and soundness with suitability and manners to count. To be scored under the open numerical judging system. Each competitor will jump one round of approximately 10 fences. The 12 horses/ponies with the highest scores from the first round will return to jump a second round. In the event of a tie that affects the selection of the top 12, one judge’s score will be designated as the tie breaker. The scores of the 12 horses/ponies in the second round will be added to their first-round scores and placed in order of their total score for the two rounds.

Horses/ponies tied for first place only will jump a third round over a shortened course. Ties for all other places will remain tied. Formal attire is required. To be shown over a course of approximately 10 jumps not to exceed 3' in height with spreads to 3'. Children’s Hunter Ponies will jump 2'6"; spreads to 2'6"

WIHS Children’s & Adult Jumper Championships

Eligibility: Thirty horse/rider combinations will be accepted, based on points accumulated in WIHS qualifying classes during the qualfying period. In addition, the overall children’s and adult jumper champions at the 2010 WIHS Regional Horse Show will automatically qualify. Riders are limited to showing two horses in the Jumper Championships. Riders may not compete in any other jumper class at the Washington International Horse Show. Horses may not compete in any other class at the WIHS except the WIHS Equitation Finals.  

Format: Classes will be run under Table II, Sec. 2(a). Time First Jump-Off. The first round and first jump-off, if any, are decided by adding together the faults incurred over the course and any penalties for exceeding the time allowed. In the event of equality of faults after the first round, there will be one jump-off for the first place in which time will decide in the event of equality of faults. Time in the first round will decide between horses tied for other than 1st place. To be shown over a course of approximately 10 jumps. Horses to jump 3'9".
